Per data released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have perished during detention beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has indicated that the actual toll is probably substantially greater, due to numerous of unaccounted for individuals originating in Gaza.

Prominent Examples

Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, including a 50-year-old medical chief who lost his life in detention after a third of a year in confinement.

A detainee detained alongside the individual reported that he was taken to the exercise area by correctional officers immediately preceding his passing, visibly injured and unclothed from the hips downward. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military gave researchers with the number of casualties in custody, and limited other details for example the facility where they died, but without the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems
